Gedday all,

I've just had a query about absolute file path hyperlinks (i.e. those mapped to the server, not a mapped drive) in MSWord (~2003) that are inserted using Insert>Hyperlink, and pasting a file path into Address field. Details include that the 'Existing file or web page' icon is highlighted as the 'Link to' option.

The hyperlink works after the link is saved, but breaks when the document is saved. The lead part of the link gets replaced with a few dots.

Here is the remedy:

... after you click Save, Word may change the link to a path that is relative to the Word document?s location, a virtual path that begins with ?/

To prevent Word from changing your hyperlinks, take the following steps:

1. Click Tools | Options (in Word 2007, Office Button | Word Options).

2. On the General tab, click the Web Options button (in Word 2007, this button is at the very bottom of the Advanced section of Word Options).

3. In the Web Options window, click the Files tab.

4. Clear the check box for ?Update links on save.?

5. Click OK to save your preferences.

[May also need to turn off "Update auto links at open" on the General tab at step 2.]

BTW, yesterday I had cause to search the archives looking for a tip I knew had come from one of the list's gurus several years ago. I suspected the source to be Howard S, Micky G, or Stuart B.

After not too much looking, I found the tip on how to paste the most recent clipboard as the 'replace' part of a search and replace, posted by Micky G in July 2004. Many thanks. The method... is to put ^c in the 'replace' field. And that explains why my efforts of using ^v didn't work. Fortunately, I did no damage.

Cheers,
Terry
