I've used and liked xv and Imagemagick.
You can download xv from:

ImageMagick:

From memory (and I'm going back quite a few years), xv is a screen
capture tool, ImageMagick does that but also is good for doing batch
manipulation operations (such as converting between graphics formats,
adding borders), and the GIMP is meant as a full Photoshop replacement.
