I set up a wiki, but after a month no-one had posted on it and it closed = itself (and the host wanted a fee to re-establish it). In general, wikis require very little administration - they are = generally self-administering. We use them at work. Very good. -----Original Message----- From: Debbie.Hope@xxxxxxxxx [mailto:Debbie.Hope@xxxxxxxxx] Sent: Monday, 1 March 2004 11:44 AM To: austechwriter@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: atw: Re: Tips exchange Firstly - wasn't there a wiki going somewhere for this sort of thing? Secondly - Wouldn't it be great if we had an internet 'forum' for Austechwriter? Cons - Granted that there would be financial implications for server =3D costs etc. and it would create a lot of work administration wise. Pros - a one stop shop for Austechwriter.... No more individual emails or digests - simply connect to the forum =3D whenever time suits, read whichever threads / posts you are interested in and =3D nothing else. I belong to several forums and find them extremely interesting and easy = =3D to use.=3D20 Debbie -----Original Message----- From: Tracy Jenner-Lawson [mailto:tnr@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx]=3D20 Sent: Monday, 1 March 2004 11:34=3D20 To: austechwriter@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: atw: Re: Tips exchange Another great idea!! ----- Original Message -----=3D20 From: Fullerton, Elizabeth=3D20 To: austechwriter@xxxxxxxxxxxxx=3D20 Sent: Monday, March 01, 2004 8:22 AM Subject: atw: Re: Tips exchange why don't we stick them all on a website somewhere? -----Original Message----- From: Tracy Jenner-Lawson [mailto:tnr@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx] Sent: Saturday, 28 February 2004 1:34 PM To: austechwriter@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: atw: Re: Tips exchange Hello I think this would be a very helpful idea, Tracy ----- Original Message -----=3D3D20 From: Craig Hadden=3D3D20 To: 'austechwriter@xxxxxxxxxxxxx'=3D3D20 Sent: Friday, February 27, 2004 12:08 PM Subject: atw: Tips exchange Don't you think it would be great if many people on the list posted = =3D =3D3D tips about a variety of subjects? What a fantastic resource and knowledge exchange that could be. (Not necessarily just about software, =3D although =3D3D it has the advantage of being clear-cut compared to some other =3D knowledge domains.)=3D3D20 To me, the key is to keep tips short and to the point. Then it =3D3D wouldn't matter if you read several tips that you knew already, because you = =3D =3D3D wouldn't have spent much time reading them! And people who didn't already =3D know =3D3D them would quickly learn something useful. Evidently many users don't like "Tips of the Day" in software =3D because =3D3D such tips provide information which, *at the time*, is not relevant to = =3D =3D3D their work, and is often hard to find again when it *is* needed. (A recipe = =3D =3D3D for frustration!)=3D3D20 But I *like* tips. And if I think a particular tip will be useful, I = =3D =3D3D write it down. Which brings me to another tip that isn't solely about software: * Keep a written record of tips, which you can take with you on your = =3D =3D3D laptop or when you change jobs or contracts. You can use the same document = =3D to record anything that might be useful to remember months later, such = =3D as Internet addresses, and code examples such as JavaScript or Visual = =3D =3D3D Basic. By using a single document, you can easily keep track of, back up and = =3D =3D3D transport all the of URLs and other stuff that you find useful.=3D3D20 Tracy wrote: > This is great, thank-you for the handy hints, always appreciated Thank you for the feedback, Tracy. I'm glad you found the tips =3D useful. So come on, everybody -- each of us has at least one tip that we =3D could =3D3D share whenever the list is quiet.
