Aha, Rob (Partridge),

My immediately previous response (about using Notepad) and your
earlier reply, in which you state:
"No I wasn't aware, and it will come in useful in the future, but my end
result is to have a doc listing all the word docs in the directory (tree)=
,"
...has given me some ideas.

You can use the MS-DOS command prompt to generate a file tree of
whatever directory you choose, using the "tree" command and
redirecting the output to a text file.

For example, run the command prompt (Windows Flag+R displays the
Run prompt, type cmd and press Enter). Before going any further,
type DOSKEY and press Enter, which stores what command you type,
which you can then browse and reuse with your up and down arrows,
go to the directory that you want (maybe C:\ROBSDOX) and type
Tree /F > ROBSDOXLIST.TXT, (note the greater than symbol)
which creates a text file of the redirected command prompt
screen output. You can also do the same for the=20

Then you can go back into that text (just type ROBSDOXLIST.TXT
and press Enter for Notepad to display it - use the font Terminal
to see the Tree lines to the directories) and add what you want,
like the file properties under each file name.=20

You can get a more comprehensive list of the file names with their
size and timestamp attributes for each folder by redirecting a
directory listing DIR command to a text file in much the same manner.

I used to write batch files that did this stuff (a list of DOS
commands, one a line, in a Notepad text file, with an extension that
I renamed to ".BAT") to grab all this info to save with, activate and
capture in my backup archives.

Type HELP TREE or HELP DIR at the command prompt for more.

Alt+Enter toggles the command prompt shell between
being a window on the desktop and being a full screen.

Typing EXIT and pressing Enter closes the command prompt shell.

HTH.

Regards,

Michael
