You're just talking about the | symbol, aren't you -- it doesn't
actually work as a pipe in this application?

I'd refer to it as the vertical bar and show an example in
brackets as you did for us. I would certainly have an index
entry for "pipe symbol, see vertical bar".

ObObscure Fact: the original symbol for a pipe in UNIX was
the caret ( ^ ). In fact you can still use it instead of the | symbol
in nearly all variants of the Bourne shell.
