A girl in my brother's class at primary school was knocked down while crossing 
the road to get to school. An unknown person (believed to be the school 
cleaner, Mr Lapham) painted a zebra crossing on the road to give the 
authorities the hint that a real one might be overdue. The crossing was much 
appreciated, less so the sign he added, which as you approached the school read:

SLOW  CHILDREN
