Hmm, Anna (Tedborn),

Could be the local language setting on the PC in question.
(Set to US English?)

Cannot recall if, like a Word file, a FrameMaker file can have a specific=

spell check language assigned to it, but this would be worth verifying.

Maybe an incorrect custom dictionary file is assigned to or part of
the file (or a related template file) and has become its little
"travelling companion".

Even if you believe that the custom dictionary might not apply to
everyone and is unlikely to be the culprit, try opening / editing it,
then search to see if a few key non-words that you know are getting
through the regular spell check screening process are within that file,=20

I would almost bet that, if the issue is not in a custom dictionary,
then the main dictionary in use is the wrong (read US English default)
one, assigned by either FrameMaker itself or the operating environment
in use.

Another option (most likely) is that the non-words that are not being
picked up are either in all capitals or are a mix of letters and numbers,=

which are specifically set to be ignored in the options for the spell
checker.

Remember also that spell checkers are rarely context aware and will
not react to a correctly spelt word of another meaning used out of
context. So manually check the contextual use of the words you
want it to capture and verify with a real (paper based) dictionary

I always recommend the Collins English Dictionary, Australian Edition,
as the most modern, up to date and relevant dictionary of the English
language as it is actually used here. The Collins CoBUILD Dictionary
is, IMNSHO, the finest repository of global English.

Or go to <http://www.onelook.com/browse.shtml> for a variety of
on-line dictionary and glossary resources.

HTH.

Regards,

Michael

Subject: atw: FrameMaker Spelling Checker

We write our documentation in FrameMaker 7.1 (and previously 6.0). When w=
e
run the spelling checker it misses quite a few obvious typos and spelling=

mistakes. Our documentation is over thousand pages so we're reliant on th=
e
spelling checker.

We run the spelling checker on this document on several different machine=
s
with the same results (it ignoring typos and spelling mistakes), which ha=
s
made us draw the conclusion it can't be some local dictionary that is the=

problem.

Does anyone know what it is that is causing this problem and what we can =
do
about it?

Warm regards
Anna
