atw: Pipe Symbol or Vertical Bar?

I was about to describe the behaviour of the
pipe symbol (|) in a field when I realised
that "pipe" might be what I'm used to because
of my UNIX background.
I checked the Web and have found instances of "pipe":
<http://www.webenalysis.com/special-characters.asp>
and "vertical bar":
<http://hotwired.lycos.com/webmonkey/reference/special_characters/>
Which is considered the correct term?
I'm writing for Microsoft Windows users.
