*User-centred design for technical communicators – Melbourne, 3 September*

*Gerry Gaffney* is talking about UX at the ASTC Conference in Melbourne in
October. But you can hear him before that by registering for his one-day
workshop.

Increasingly, documentation is an integral part of the user interface and
the user experience. Combined with new practices such as agile development,
the role of the technical communicator is more challenging and potentially
more rewarding and exciting.

The value of the user experience (UX) is now well accepted. Products and
services without ‘good UX’ are likely to fail in the marketplace and the
workplace.

Having an intimate understanding of users’ needs, and being able to analyse
issues and assess the impacts of design (of content and interaction), is
now essential knowledge for technical communicators.

In this hands-on workshop, Gerry will take you through how to design and
test, on paper, a simple application. Using it as a framework, you’ll
explore the user-centred design process, the meaning and measurement of
usability, and discuss trends in UX.
