Words Without Borders—The

Europe: New Bulgarian Literature

Bridge in Burgas, Bulgaria 2012.
Dear Reader, Words Without
Borders, the online magazine for international literature, is delighted to
present literature by eight contemporary Bulgarian writers in its March 2017
issue. Through fiction and essays that grapple with everything from the Soviet
years and exile to how literature bolsters us in economic and moral crises, the
writing here demonstrates the diversity and excellence of Bulgarian letters.
“The soul marches at a
different speed. . . . [L]iterature knows more about that speed.” Georgi
Gospodinov contributes an essay, adapted from his speech before the Leipzig
Book Fair in 2010, about the importance of literature in difficult times.
“I’m like a line of
Baudelaire, she was thinking, and it was over for me long ago.” An excerpt from
Theodora Dimova’s novel Adriana weaves a tale of another poète maudit.
“For a book to live, to
evolve, it needs to step beyond the borders of its own country and come alive
in other languages, in other cultures, and in other minds.” In their
introduction to the issue, guest editors Svetlozar Zhelev and Angela Rodel
discuss the interplay between Bulgarian politics and letters and make the case
for more Bulgarian literature in English translation.
And on our blog you’ll find
our interview with Elizabeth Kostova and an essay by Theodora Dimova on finding
inspiration for Adriana in her father’s unfinished novel.
Like each issue we’ve
published since 2003, the Bulgaria issue of Words Without Borders is entirely
online and free for you to explore. Our web site is home to an archive of over
2,400 pieces of literature in English translation, from 132 countries and
counting. There you’ll find work by many other Bulgarian writers, including
Martin Karbowski, Olya Stoyanova, and Georgi Tenev. If you’d like to stay up to
date with the latest international literature, interviews, and news from Words
Without Borders, I invite you to sign up for our twice-monthly newsletter at
