JOB OPENING: Assistant or Associate Curator for Theater/DanceReview of
applications to start February 1, 2016
DECEMBER 22, 2015

The Curtis R. Priem Experimental Media and Performing Arts Center (EMPAC)
at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Troy, NY invites applications for the
full-time position of Assistant or Associate Curator for Theater/Dance.
Applicants must have expertise in the area of theater and/or dance in the
context of contemporary performance practices, which includes the
integration of digital technology arising out of an artistic need.
About EMPAC

EMPAC goes beyond a traditional university performing arts center in that
its events and performances are only a part of its program, with
residencies, commissions and productions taking up most of the resources.
The artistic program curated by the curatorial team is focused on
contemporary art, performance and their intersections. At the same time,
the infrastructure and production teams of EMPAC are part of scientific and
engineering research. EMPAC’s foundational premise has been that art,
science and technology come together under one roof, use the same
infrastructure and “breath the same air” to yield new approaches,
perspectives and understanding across all areas.

Placed within the university, EMPAC is a research and production center.
All work is project based, including production and research residencies,
commissions, performances, workshops, conferences, and festivals, among
others. The connection of residencies and artistic work with academic or
general educational goals are important and vary widely depending on each
project’s and artist’s potential.
EMPAC is rooted in the conviction that the attendance of artistic
performances, events, lectures or workshops is not an act of passive
endurance, but that focusing on extraordinary content and presentation is a
major educational force.
About The Curatorial Team

THE CURATORIAL TEAM is comprised of three positions, with a curator for
visual arts, a curator for music and this vacancy, a curator for
theater/dance. The team is supported by a Project Manager and full
production (stage, audio, video, IT) teams. Reporting to the Director of
EMPAC, the curators each have an in-depth expertise in their “native area”.
Collaboration within the team makes traditional disciplinary boundaries
permeable. Genre-crossing projects and those that combine different media
and multiple approaches, or works that may cross over into the expert
domain of one of the curatorial colleagues, are all part of the curatorial
team’s mode with discussions and advise from the expert colleague, a
central part of EMPAC’s approach.

All artistic projects at EMPAC fall under “time-based arts” with a focus on
the utilization of contemporary technology.
Qualifications:

Minimally, candidates at any level must possess a Bachelor’s degree in
theater, dance, choreography or other related field, along with curatorial
and/or artistic experience on the national and international level of
contemporary artistic developments in the field of contemporary dance.
Candidates whose experiences are primarily internships, performances, or in
a support position will be considered at the Assistant Curator level.
Individuals who possess direct curatorial experience will be considered at
the Associate Curator level.

All candidates must demonstrate a solid intellectual, aesthetic and
historical understanding of current directions of theater and dance both on
and off stage, and experience with the production of dance and/or theater
is required. Additionally, knowledge of and experience with digital
technology as an interactive and algorithmic tool in the context of
performing arts is required (beyond “video projection using live camera
feeds”).
We are looking for a curator with expert knowledge in theater and/or dance
including the intersection of contemporary artistic practices and
contemporary technology; who can reflect on the relationship of tools,
aesthetics and artistic goals; who enjoys exploration and collaboration;
who sees an audience as essential to the arts; who seeks the challenge to
contribute to a contemporary art program at the oldest engineering school
in the US; and who is driven by what the arts can offer beyond streamlined
entertainment.

The position allows more emphasis and experience in one of the listed areas
and less on others, but it is expected that motivation, interest,
communication skills and intellectual agility allow the assistant or
associate curator to expand and grow in all areas.

Active artists seeking to continue their artistic work, or academicians who
have no experience in curating or producing artistic productions are
requested to rethink their application.

applications will begin February 1, 2016 and will continue until position
is filled.

<goebej@xxxxxxx?cc=gardnk@xxxxxxx&subject=Question%20regarding%20curatorial%20position>,
