*curated by_vienna*, now in its third year, commissions co-operations
between renowned international curators and contemporary art galleries in
Vienna.

Under the title *EAST by SOUTH WEST, curated by_vienna 2011* has invited 21
leading curators to present works by an extensive range of artists from the
former-communist states and Turkey—and western artists fascinated by those
places—in a time, and in a world, largely governed by global mechanisms and
ways of thinking.

Featuring 102 artists, the project facilitates comparative research and
viewing experiences attuned to cultural forces at work in the places
encapsulated by the project and the way they impact upon contemporary art
production.

curated by_vienna 2011 has a special project website that is the best place
to find out more about the individual exhibitions, and access information
about special events. Browse: www.curatedby.at

The project is accompanied by a bilingual (German/English) catalogue
published by Verlag fuer moderne Kunst Nuremburg, containing essays by
Christoph Thun-Hohenstein, Sabine B. Vogel, and Simon Rees as well as
curatorial statements about each of the exhibitions, information about the
participating artists and curators, and full-colour reproductions.

A suite of three panel discussions involving 10 of the participating artists
and curators, plus 5 invited international guests will be held at the Messe
Wien on Saturday 14 May, 1–6.30 pm. Exploring three major themes connecting
the 21 exhibitions—the status of feminism in art from the region, on-going
colonial legacies, and periphery complexes—the panels provide an excellent
opportunity to find out more about the socio-political and conceptual
contexts underpinning the project.

The opening days of curated by_vienna 2011 coincide with VIENNAFAIR (May
12–15, 2011) and Fruits, Flowers, and Clouds (May 12–14, 2011).

curated by_vienna 2011 is presented and funded by *departure* in cooperation
