ARTIST TALK OF THE ARMENIAN ARTIST ARMINE HOVHANNISYAN

28 JUNE 2012,
AT 6 P.M.

IN THE RESIDENCY SPACE OF THE ART TODAY - CENTER FOR
CONTEMPORARY ART PLOVDIV, KONSTANTIN STOILOV STR. 36, OLD TOWN

The Art
Today has the pleasure to announce the talk of Armine Hovhannisyan, our
current artist-in-residence. Hovhannisyan is participating in URBAN DREAMS
in the framework of the international project HEICO (Heritage, Identity and
Communication in Contemporary European Art Practices) of the network
Atlantis. She is going to talk about her work in general and her artistic
research in Plovdiv.

Armine Hovhannisyan is an artist based in Yerevan,
Armenia. She has graduated from Armenian Open University, Department of
Fine Arts in 2004. Since 2003 she has taken part in various local and
international exhibitions, symposiums and workshops. Some of the crucial
participations include "Gender Trouble. Platforms" organized by Art and
Cultural Studies Laboratory (ACSL, also partner of HEICO; 2007-2009),
"Society, Body, Art" at ACCEA, Gyumri Biennales (2004-2008), "Changes
through Exchanges", an experimental educational project organized by AOU,
Fine Arts Department, "Soviet AgitArt. Restoration" organized by BM SUMA,
the Contemporary Art Center in Istanbul, and "Manufacture", a residency
project in Istanbul organized by Bilgi University. In 2007 she was awarded
by the Armenian President of the Republic Youth Prize in the scope of Fine
Arts and Film.

Her works includes various media such as interactive
installations, drawings, films or video and photography. Usually the main
method of work takes the form of a collaboration, either with another
artist or an involvement of different social layers. In her recent artistic
activity Armine examines the construction of the stereotyped narratives and
norms in current society and the historical-cultural remains dealing with
the Soviet history. By these both interests she questions the mechanisms of
their representation by artistic subversive gestures and suggests the final
realization as an interplay between the borders of fiction/reality, and
creates new limits and boundaries between the visible and invisible, while
very often using the tools of those normative images, stories
and
identities.

Since 2003 she works at the Natioanl Center of
Aesthetics, Fine Arts and Decorative Applied Arts studio-college as an
art-teacher. This activity leads her to initiate various projects for art
education.

THE TALK WILL BE IN ENGLISH. FREE ENTRY.
