I'm a little skeptical about the hyper-skepticism that the "cold fusion"
observations aroused: yes, the initial publicity turned out to be over-
confident, but it seems that the subsequent reaction was over-negative,
prematurely concluding that the phenomenon had been "disproven" or
"proven impossible" - which I don't think is actually a justified
conclusion.
My own suspicion is that it's a real effect, the conditions of its
production are not well understood, and making it work consistently
is likely to require the same level of control over the composition
and molecular structure of metals such as palladium whose mastery
for silicon enables modern semiconductor devices.
I'm viewing the current state of "cold fusion" as akin to the state of
electrical signal rectification at the point where the "cat whisker"
detector had first been discovered - if you get lucky and contact
an an active site on your galena (a naturally occurring lead sulfide
mineral) crystal with the thin wire probe, the phenomenon will occur,
but it takes some fiddling. (If examined with the technology of that
time, a silicon junction diode would simply appear to be a piece of
extremely pure silicon!)
