Well, the thing to understand is that L* is not some deep fundamental
number with close ties to engine performance. Rather, it's a vague and
empirical thing that may be useful for comparing quite similar engines,
but means very little when designs are too different -- and we don't know
which design variables are significant or how much they have to change to
be "too different".
