I can't see where these get built - they aren't in lib, and I tried a find 
command from the source directory, but it didn't find anything. I'm hoping 
it's OK.

Official Argyll releases don't build .so's - all the utilities are statically 
linked.
Linux distro's may be doing something else - I don't know, since it's nothing 
to do
with me.

Yes, this is harmless if it appears to work anyway. Some graphics systems don't 
seem to
have bit depths that mesh. It implies that they must be doing some sort of 
hardware
interpolation to make it work, but nothing seems to be documented, making 
software
development a guessing game...
