Open source developers don't use magic, they need some viable
technical approach just like anyone else, and typically they
don't have the sort of resources that a commercial organization
can muster. And if you think that donations are a motivating factor,
then you are sadly mistaken - they amount to beer and pizza money
at best. [ Much of the donations to ArgyllCMS have gone towards
instrument purchases, the two i1d3's being the latest example.]

Yes, that would be nice. But the reality is that the vendors have been slow
to deliver it, because for 99% of their customers, 8 bits is enough.
