An update on the service for Tom Hyle
A mutual colleague of ours, Tom Hyle, passed away on May 17 after a short
battle with stomach cancer. Please keep his wife Nancy and the families in
your prayers.
There will be a Memorial Service held for Tom on Wednesday, May 25th,
1:00pm, in the Rolling Hills Community Church Sanctuary. Tom and Nancy
have faithfully attended the 11:00 service for many years. Tom previously
served on the church Board, and was very active in mission work,
particularly in India.
A reception will follow the service in the Fellowship Hall. The Rolling
Hills Community Church is located at 6201 Lohman Ford Road, Lago Vista, TX

I was privileged to have the opportunity to write one of the short
biographies on Tom Hyle. He left NASA relatively early to take a teaching
position at Houston Austin High School in 1987, later transferring to Clear
Brook High School the year that it opened. That is quite a remarkable
career move, and certainly not one designed to make you rich. The biography
tells about the threats that he received from students with criminal
records, and about one of the enterprising gang leaders who offered to be
his bodyguard. The importance of the mission trips will no doubt be
emphasized. Not just India, but China, Palestine, Hungary, Russia, Kenya,
Mexico, Peru, Haiti, Costa Rica, and Chile. The Hungary adventure was among
the Romani peoples, what we often call Gypsies. These types of mission
trips combined the Christian imperative to go and present the Gospel with
distinctive acts of service. This was a life well lived.
