Once again something comes along that makes for a laugh. This time it is Ron's
Offer, see the attached. It is really hard to believe that this was a serious
proposal. The card came via a Click@xxxxxxxx postcard from the Houston House
Dealers in Sugar Land Texas and were delivered to every house on the street.
The Houston House Dealers is apparently trying to capitalize on the feeling of
desperation in several areas of town. I don't believe they will have any takers
because what is sensed is not desperation but the feeling of frustration, that
after one month and three weeks "dried out" we are not moving very fast in
reestablishing the infrastructure we need, for instance the Walgreens Drugstore
has still not reopened, the paint store is operating out of a 28 foot truck and
with the rains the debris in streets really need to get cleaned up.
Dickinson took a big hit but those who have lived here love the place.
Surrounding us there are the mega housing complexes, separation between homes
so limited you can hear families talking in their back yards... they have small
lots, grass maintained by the homeowners association and violations reported by
the yard police. Uniform landscaping at corners, routinely changed by the
season, and only limited individuality in the yards. That is not Dickinson
In Dickinson we have tall old trees, oaks, pines, cedar and some colorful
tallow in the fall tallow. We have a grocery store, Zieglers that emplys the
high school kids, lets them off for football games and has successfully
challenged Food Town, Krogers and others. We are a bird and animal sanctuary,
two pairs of resident hawks producing 2-3 chicks per year. We see the hawks
teaching their young to fly... kick them from the nest about 40 feet up,
flutter to the ground and then practice flying repeatedly to the low branches
of the shrubs.... learning, testing, increasing range and altitude until
finally flying back to the nest. We have northern wrens, bluejays, cardinals,
and others that splash and flutter in the birdbath during the hot summer... we
have a resident owl in the Oak outside our bathroom window. The high school is
class 6A, our kids are tough, manual laborers who are frequently in State
playoffs. The team produced Andre Ware, first black to with Heisman as
quarterback. Saint Josephs Church and School, founded by Italian immigrants in
1890, was destroyed in the 1900 hurricane, was rebuilt and later established as
the Diocesan Shrine drawing many tourists and religious groups. Town is about 7
mile diameter, surrounded by League City, and Texas City and has a long and
colorful Italian history and the Knights of Columbus continue to feed two meals
per day.
It will take more than a flood to chase us off....I don't think there will be
any takers for Ron's sellout offer.
Clean clothing means a lot. A happy day arrived for many of our citizens as
the LP Corporation brought in a series of mobile washers and driers,provided
the detergents, etc. this hit the newspapers and got rave reviews for the LP
team.
