Hi gang,
Every night I do the shopping for the materials for the repair crew. I purchase
all except basics of lumber, hardware, etc. this allows keeping track of all
receipts as advised by the Insurance company. Tonight I was searching for
paint, Lowes does not carry much oil based paint ... the painter uses only oil
based paints for the trim, doors, etc... sez that it provides the best
finishes. I got the paint at Sherwin Williams and went after 1 part epoxy for
the laundry floors... no dice so it was to Home Depot. After finding the epoxy
paint, I went to the grocery store... ice cream, chocolate syrup, whipping
cream and peanuts.. Could not find scoop so used teaspoon. The end of a
productive day.
I try to get settled before dark, only 4 of 28 homes are occupied so it is
pretty dark and any car on the street is suspicious. The guy across the street
is a fire first, ask questions later.
Last week I started staying upstairs at home at night, so garage open at 7AM
for workman.. I get up about 5:30, coffee, paper, breakfast and fruit...
workmen finish about 430PM... then I go to to Jeanies for supper, do shopping
for next days work and back to the house by 7:30
Yesterday we opened the area behind the bookcases at the chimney... bad mold
half way to the ceiling, dry wall removal greater that most other locations. I
went in search of a dehumidifier, found one read the manual... interesting
device. It recommends using a garbage can to contain water extracted...this so
that if you forget to dump water it wont overflow onto the are you are drying
out. You set the desired humidity level for shutoff... recommends about 26%,
the machine cycles indicating present humidity... fireplace area was in the
90%... periodically the system stops, purges out the condensed water then
continues on. In about two hours there was about 1 gallon water in the bookcase
area. 90% of drywall is installed and with paint undercoat... things are
moving. Much of base and door trim, and the "day" room ready to be painted.
Tomorrow the floor team arrives to build the false floor for the family room
and then the areas where the hardwood was removed... none of the crew speak
English, so the foreman Oscar went through the work plan. I told Marta to stay
near the phone as interpreter if they have problems.
Two things come to mind relative to people... the job foreman, Oscar is
Mexican... virtually all of the workmen are Mexican, they all are well skilled
and many but not all speak English. They work hard, pack their own lunches,
arrive early about 7:30 and go non stop.thru the day. They own many of the
small businesses, participate in the community and churches. I believe that the
local community would just come to a halt without their work and it is time to
finally get both political parties to act relative to immigration reform and
provide some stability to the Hispanics here today. I guess I am prejudiced
since Marta's parent were Mexican
Lana Huynh is my barber, an attractive, petite Vietnamese about 5'4" and about
45 years old. Her husband is a UPS driver and she is a cantor at church. With
no formal education she put her two children thru college and purchased the
property for a three chair barbershop. Her son also a licensed barber and is
now in schooling at University of Houston. Lana was flooded and the local
Vietnamese community got her back in operation. Everyone talks to their barber
(or hair dresser) so they are a good source of information in the community.
She hears the rumors and concerns, contacts appropriate personnel and puts out
a bulletin related to city council, law enforcement, FEMA issues and is a real
service to the community. She is really aggravated by the sit down protests in
the NFL and the lack of discipline enforced by the owners. This morning she put
out a seven minute email video on the origin of the National Anthem. She has
good reason to thank America. She and her parents were boat people who escaped
Vietnam to the Philippines after the American withdrawal. They were
subsequently sponsored by a Navy family and brought to Louisiana. Haircuts at
her place are cut rate for veterans.
Yesterday I picked up my first flat, a 3 inch finishing nail that penetrated
the tread and went out sidewall.... tire replacement. Local tire shop did not
have replacement so I went to Ford which had been flooded but was now
operable... three hours later had tire on Car. Interesting driving when I went
to pickup the dehumidifier...about 1 out of 5 to 6 cars on the road are new
with temporary licenses... returning I noted three off road cars with flats in
just a couple miles....tire failure is a threat to all driving in our area..
That's about it for the day. We are on the road to recovery and my prayers are
for those now living in the abandoned Malls in the local area and
Houston....the good Lord is testing his people.
Cheers , Gene
