Hello, all, It's Sunday morning in Corinth. I just read an email on the AMC list and it reminded me that I miss you all. We tried a few times last October to visit the local Orthodox Church here in Corinth but never could quite hit the time right. Seems like the liturgy goes on pretty early. As it happens, the building we're staying in this year has a clear shot to the church's loudspeaker so the chanting is wafting in the window as I type. Kind of like spiritual take-out :-) You can catch up on a lot of what's going on with us on Janie's blog. http://jfriesen.edublogs.org/ On my side of things, I've been pretty consumed with trying to figure out this excavating thing. I'm working with a guy who's done it a lot, so I'm not screwing up any potential finds or anything (at least I think I'm not). But there's a lot to learn: soil gradations, documenting what's there before you destroy it, types of pottery. The pottery's quite a challenge. You find lots of fragments in any given day, usually at least a hundred and maybe more. Then a specialist has to figure out what they are in broad terms to tell you what time period the pottery comes from so you know what you're digging in. The pottery sherds are like misc. pieces of jigsaw puzzles, except you don't know how many puzzles you have pieces from and have to figure out what the puzzle pictures were. Had a nice time last night. Some friends drove us to a restaurant by the bay, right at the mouth of the Corinth canal. Had a nice leisurely dinner while watching several ships go through. Weather was perfect, company great, food okay... Went across the street to an ice cream place to watch the last 20 minutes of the USA-Italy game on an outdoor big-screen set up.
