Garland,

I just wanted to let you know that I made it back to Mexico City safe and
sound. I really enjoyed my time in Austin and my research went very well.
Thanks for responding to my email and helping me find a place to stay. My
time with the Palmers and the Friesens was great. I also wanted to let you
know that it was a pleasure to worship with the Austin Mennonite Church. I
grew up in St. Catharines, Ontario, Canada where I went to a General
Conference Mennonite Church. Since there was no youth group there, I went to
one at a Mennonite Brethren church. I also went to a Mennonite Brethren
highschool and then later on was in British Columbia at Columbia Bible
College, a bible school started by the MB's but now run by the General
Conference and the MB's in British Columbia. Anyway, I say all this because
I have always tried to look for Mennonite churches wherever I go to see how
they understand and interpret the Anabaptist vision. What impressed me about
Austin Mennonite Church was some of the similarities it has with the
Mennonite churches here in Mexico City. I have found that the MB's in Canada
have started to follow the church growth and mega church models while the
General Conference churches appear to be like high Anglican churches. What
Austin Mennonite has, something I have found here in Mexico City, is the
emphasize on building community. The hospitality expressed in the members of
Austin Mennonite Church was refreshing and made my stay in Austin that much
better. Please give me greetings to the church and tell them how thankful I
am to this church community. I hope all is going well in Canada. Although I
study indigenous peoples in Latin America I am very ignorant about
indigenous peoples in Canada. Their hsitory is silenced in the media. Thanks
for making me aware of some of these problems in the Great White North. Take
care, Jason Dyck
