Urgent Announcement from Mennonite Central Committee:  If possible, please

this information with your congregation on Sunday, March 30.

MCC's Iraq Crisis Response
March 20, 2003

What is MCC's current relief aid response to Iraq?
MCC has pre-positioned the following relief aid in secure warehouses in Iraq
and
Jordan:
12,400 - relief buckets  (8,000 in Iraq, 2,000 in Jordan, another 2,400 are
on
the way)
33,000 - blankets and comforters  (all in Iraq)
200 - tents  (1 tent for 6 people, all in Iraq)
14 - water bladders (each bladder holds 6000 liters, enough for 20 liters a
person per day, all in Iraq)
$23,000 - (funding for partner in Iraq, CARE Iraq, covers operational costs
for
55 water trucks)
19,200 - 28 oz. cans of beef  (arriving in Jordan mid-March and positioned
for
refugees coming into Jordan.)

MCC is requesting an additional 16,000 relief buckets for shipment to the
Middle
East.

Since 1991 MCC has shipped over $8.1 million Cdn/$5.4 million U.S. in aid,
including school kits, medicine for children, blankets, quilts, relief kits,
health kits, canned meat, medical textbooks, and hospital supplies.

Has MCC released a statement about the situation in Iraq?
Yes, MCC has released a "response document" on the war in Iraq.

What can constituents and others do in response?
They can pray for peace, assemble relief kits, sew comforters, and
contribute to
the Iraq Crisis Response Fund.

Is there work constituents can do in the region?
At this time MCC is not scheduling groups to work in the region.

What is the status of MCC workers in the region?
MCC maintains daily contact with workers in the Middle East. Currently, MCC
staff for Iraq are located in Amman Jordan. As of March 20, MCC has
contingency
plans in place for the departure of workers, continues to monitor the
situation
closely and maintains close contact with local partners. All total MCC has

North American workers, including children, six local staff, and one
European in
the Middle East. MCC staff are based in Jordan, Iraq, Lebanon, Palestine,
Egypt,
and Syria.

What You Can Do to Help:  MCC asks that people pray and work for peace,
assemble
relief kits, sew comforters, and contribute cash to the Iraq Crisis Response
Fund.
We will continue to receive Relief Kits.
Kits should contain:
     4 bars bath soap
     1 plastic bottle shampoo (13-24 oz. sealed in a plastic bag)
     10 cups powdered laundry detergent (double-bag in 1 gal. re-sealable
bags)
     1 squeeze tube toothpaste (minimum 6 oz)
     4 adult-size toothbrushes (leave in package)
     4 NEW bath towels, medium weight (NOT white)
     1 each: hairbrush, wide-tooth comb and fingernail clipper
     1 box of adhesive bandages, minimum 40, assorted
     1 package of sanitary pads (18-24 thin, maxi or ultra-thin)
Place contents in a cardboard box. Deliver to:  Mennonite Central Committee,
121 East 30th Street, North Newton, KS  67117, or check for the closest
collection point by calling MCC Central States 1-316-283-2720.  Cash for the
Iraq Crisis Response Fund should be sent to MCC, P.O. Box 235, North Newton,
KS
67117.
