November 22nd, 2007 Thanksgiving Day

For many, Thanksgiving is a day for giving thanks, football, and filling up
on turkey. But for more than 9,500 people, it is another way of showing
support for Caritas and the clients we serve. This Austin tradition takes
place every year on Thanksgiving morning with individuals from all over the
city stepping up to the challenge of a five-mile run/walk to raise awareness
and dollars for the programs and services offered at Caritas of Austin. For
the past 15 years, Mike Haggerty, owner of ThunderCloud Subs has partnered
with Caritas of Austin to create a pre-Thanksgiving tradition. The 2006
Turkey Trot raised over $100,000 with all proceeds benefiting Caritas of
Austin. This year's race promises to be just as unforgettable and worthwhile
for those up to the challenge. For more information regarding the race,
please contact Special Events Manager, Julie Metzger at 646-1268 or by email

97605038> Caritas Community Kitchen Volunteers Find Love While Serving

Many people who volunteer at Caritas often find a worthwhile experience, a
new outlook on life and the feeling they have made a difference in someone's
day. John Warren and Laura Thomas found all of those things along with true
love while serving up hope in the Community Kitchen. They married on May
26th, 2007 and reaffirmed volunteering can change one's life.

John and Laura's initial meeting took place in the Community Kitchen in
January 2006, where both happened to be preparing lunch. Both had chosen to
volunteer at Caritas for similar reasons. "Caritas is a genuine grass roots
organization, in the sense that they depend on volunteers to serve the
public. You get the feeling immediately that you are truly needed here,"
Laura explained. She had worked as a case manager for Caritas years before
volunteering in 2000 and knew firsthand the need that is in the community.
John, a management consultant and volunteer since November 2005 also shared
in Caritas' mission of providing basic needs. "Caritas aims to help
everyone who seeks assistance here. Just by serving someone lunch, I am
making a difference," he said.

Their friendship soon bloomed into romance and the couple was engaged by
October 2006. Wanting to share their Caritas experience with loved ones, the
couple also had their wedding party serve lunch to over 400 individuals in
the Community Kitchen the day before the wedding. Their commitment to
helping Caritas didn't stop there. They informed their wedding guests that
in lieu of gifts, they preferred if people would make a donation to Caritas.

"Caritas and the work they do is close to our hearts. We both realized that
Caritas would benefit greatly from these gifts," Laura said. Their efforts
to help an organization that strives to help others has made a difference.
As of August 23rd, the money donated in honor of John and Laura's wedding
raised close to $3,000. Both John and Laura thought the donations would
serve as a great thank-you to the organization that brought them together.
John and Laura continue to volunteer with Caritas and we wish them the best!

Awards and Grants

Best Practice For Refugee Resettlement

Caritas of Austin constantly strives to improve service delivery to all of
our clients. Our Refugee Orientation Program exemplifies our efforts.
Migration and Refugee Services (MRS) the administrative arm of the United
States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) which manages funds for
refugee resettlement, thought so. During the 2006 program evaluation site
visit, the Washington D.C. based Field Liaison Coordinator stated that
Caritas had a unique and creative way of handling and managing the Refugee
Orientation Program. Our program goes above and beyond the basic federal
requirements by collaborating with various local entities e.g. APD, EMS,
Capital Metro, Austin Fire Dept, etc. to inform refugees about their
services. The coordinator ultimately included this in idea her findings.
As a result, Caritas was recognized for several, "Best Practices" which
means these practices will be recommended nationwide to other refugee
programs.

 Silverton Foundation Grant

In an effort to help Caritas clients reach their goal of self sufficiency,
the Silverton Foundation awarded our Employment Program with a grant earlier
this month. With this contribution, Caritas will be able to give vocational
education scholarships to ten low-income single parents who are current or
new Caritas clients. These Silverton Scholars will receive financial and
additional assistance from Caritas throughout their studies, which will give
them the skills needed for better career opportunities. The Silverton
Foundation's generous gift will directly impact the lives of those Caritas
aims to serve while offering hope for a better future to our clients and
their families.

On August 10th, the The Austin Toros and Toros Basketball Campers, ages

The Campers for Cans contest allowed campers to compete with one another to
see who would bring in the most canned good items for a chance to meet Toros
head coach, Quin Snyder and receive an autographed basketball from the famed
coach. Caritas Executive Director, Beth Atherton was on hand to thank our
youngest supporters and to join Coach Snyder and Toros' mascot, Da Bull, in
announcing the top five contributors. Pictured here are the top five: (from
