This keeps the material taunt and keeps the hoop in place. I just draw a line around the inside of the bottom hoop onto the matting then cust out the middle almost to the line, but where there is just enough matting left to be seen on the inside of the top hoop when it is laid on the fabic. When you hoop, the top hoop catches the non slip matting and keeps the fabric and hoop from moving around or slipping. I hope this makes sense as it is an easy concept but hart to explain in words. I have several of these matted templates in all hoop sizes.
