Find a point where there is good coverage but not too dense. A tri-point needle would be ideal but if you don't have any use a light ball or a sharp. Use lighter density than you normally would. Remember you are not sewing on a woven fabric. Even though leather is tough if your density is too tight it may tear. You may want to slow things down a little to avoid heat problems.
