You can do a fill stitch over the area you want shaded in the shape you want it 
to be with the following settings. 

- No Underlay
- Trapunto Box Checked
- High number for density (I use 8-12)
- Stitch length adjustment according to the size
  of the area you are shading

I think I covered it.  I use the same technique for doing a fade on letters as 
long as they are fairly good size letters.

If you have the Dakota Flame Alphabet you can look at the properties there.  
Thats what I based mine off of.
