Dear Natalie and everyone,
The most useful thing I found for the Part 1 was doing every past exam
question I could find, and also using the big Holmes text. Even though
Holmes is vast, the questions did focus on the basic science sections in
Holmes, and not the clinical. There were some things like the nucleic acid
tests that I couldn't get enough info on from those sources, and the
references in the Training manual were useful for that - but I had to go to
different libraries to get all the references.
I found most of the ground asked in the exam questions was covered in past
papers - sometimes the exact questions used before and sometimes just the
similar territory. Some of the questions came from recently topical issues,
such as Anal Pap smears, and Hep C genotypes. Anal Pap smears had been in
the exam once before, but not the Hep C genotypes question, (at least I
hadn't seen it before!)
The others who did the exam this year may have other comments on how they
did it, and I'd love to hear their thoughts. I was the only one doing one
paper this year.
In regards to doing the Part 1 in two stages - I did it that way because I
have small children and find it hard to get enough time to study (everyone
finds this hard - so it's great that doing it in two stages is open to all
trainees). I'm glad I didn't try to do the whole thing in one go, because I
would not have had enough time. But it certainly drags the process out doing
two rounds of it. I'm also sure I spent more time getting ready for the
first paper than I would have if I was sitting both on the same day, so in
the end you probably spend more time on your Part 1 but less per year.
If I didn't have small children I would probably do both papers together and
only go through the process once. It feels like doing two Part 1 exams even
though it's not.
