They interviewed Cris Nelson on the news this morning, and she said she plans
to bring it back up. She feels that dogs, even leashed, are eventually going
to cause a serious problem, and doesn't want to have to deal with the liability
issues.

She mentioned that even leashed dogs can get into a dog fight, can bite
someone, or knock someone down....

And here is the write-up from the B'ham News today:

Dog ban at events withdrawn

The Helena City Council voted Monday to withdraw from consideration an
ordinance amendment that would have prohibited dogs from community events held
on municipal property.

The balance of the ordinance that was passed in April still stands. That
regulation bans dogs from all athletic fields at city parks and calls for dogs
to be leashed at Amphitheater and Joe Tucker Parks.

Councilwoman Cris Nelson made the motion to withdraw the amendment and members
voted 5-0 in agreement.

Nelson said there has been so much discussion between council members and
residents opposed to the amendment, she felt it was best to wait and revisit
the issue after determining what is best for all concerned.

It might not be a bad idea for those in the Helena area to email or call Ms.
Nelson with a thank-you for withdrawing this amendment. Please note though the
following: ".....to wait and revisit the issue". This will probably come up
again in the future.

Helena City Council backs off from banning pets from events
HELENA, AL (WBRC) - Helena's City Council backed off a plan to ban pets from
big city events after an outcry from dog lovers Monday night.

Man's best friend is welcome anytime at Helena's amphitheater, as long as he's
on a leash. But City Councilwoman Cris Nelson was hoping to change that because
she says at big events like Buckcreek, the 4th of July celebration, even
farmers markets, pets are becoming safety hazards.
