Confirmed Canine Influenza Case in Lee County, Alabama

On September 29th we received a report of a confirmed case of canine
influenza (H3N8) in Lee County. Canine Influenza is an emerging disease in
the
dog population and is a disease that we have been monitoring for several
years. It is highly contagious and will result in some degree of illness in
most dogs that are exposed to the disease. In most cases it results in a
cough that will persist for several weeks but in some cases can develop into
a severe pneumonia that may result in death in a small percentage of dogs.

We have more information regarding this disease on our website,
_http://www.petvetauburn.com/Canine-Flu.html_
(http://www.petvetauburn.com/Canine-Flu.html)

A vaccine for H3N8 is available and we strongly encourage you to bring
your dog in to receive this vaccine if it has not already been vaccinated. If
you are not sure if your dog has been vaccinated for flu (many have been
this year) please call our office and we can let you know. Two vaccinations
are required.

An initial vaccine followed by a booster vaccine 2 to 4 weeks later. At
risk
dogs are those that, at any time, fall into one or more of the following
groups:

1. Are boarded for any amount of time at any type of facility
2. Attend a daycare facility.
3. Visit a groomer.
4. Visit parks or any other areas where other dogs may be present
5. Are traveling.

If you have frequent contact with other dogs, you should also have your
dogs vaccinated as the virus may be transmitted on your clothing.
