Hi, This problem of discrimination from LIC, I too faced recently when I had to take up a policy. finally I got HDFC - SLIC without extra premium. It is sorry to note that the discrimination is from Govt body like LIC. I too feel we should voice against this. Regards, RAJANI. Lets prepare a memorandum and submit the same to the chairman and managing director of LIC. Rajesh, you are the right person to prepare this, as you have the legal background. regards ----- Original Message ----- From: rajesh asudani To: accessindia@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Sent: Wednesday, March 29, 2006 2:00 AM Subject: [AI] insurance woes Hello friends, What I am writing is by no means new or astonishing! It is the same old discriminatory bias against the disabled without logical/statistical basis. I have just been informed that LIC does not offer us, VH any joint policies with sighted partners and charges 0.2% nominal extra premium for whatever policies it offers to the disabled involving both the organs like eyes limbs etc. this 0.2% comes to Rs. 200 per lakh! Want of any statistical basis or logical or for that matter legal/constitutional basis for this discrimination is self-evident and I believe has been discussed in this forum more than once. It is shere arbitrariness as the differentia used to categorize the fully disabled for subjecting them to different treatment viz: charging extra premium for affording insurance cover does not bear any rational nexus to the objective to be attained, as the argument that the total disability predisposes a person to a premature death more is misleading, lacking in factual and statistical corroboration. Besides, there is a counter argument to the effect that such disabled persons are, in all likelihood, to be extra careful about their safety than the average people. If hundred percent disability warrants extra premium, then habitual drunkenness, smoking involvement in antisocial activities etc. warrant it much more, as such people are intentionally playing with their lives. I do not know about private players, whether they too have such discriminatory policies. Would love to hear members' experiences in this matter. It is high time that the matter is taken up at CCPD HC and IRDA levels. Have their been any such initiatives? If not, it is my sincere request to all the interested members and in particular to Mr. Rajiv Ratori to initiate the move.
