How to Access a Gmail Account in Windows Live Mail

This article shows how to set up Gmail in Windows Live Mail using a IMAP or 
Pop3 connection.


*I.  Access a Gmail Account in Windows Live Mail Using IMAP

To set up Gmail as an IMAP account in Windows Live Mail: 

1.  Make sure IMAP access is enabled in Gmail. 

2.  Select Go | Mail from the menu in Windows Live Mail. 

3.  Hold down the Alt key if you cannot see the menu bar. 

4.  Click Add an e-mail account at the bottom of the list. 

5.  Type your Gmail address under E-mail address:. 

6.  Type your Gmail password under Password:. 

7.  Enter your name under Display Name:. 

8.  Make sure Automatically determine my login ID is checked. (You can verify 
it is working correctly if the local part, i.e. what comes before the @, in 
your Gmail address appears under Login ID:.) 

9.  Type your Gmail password under Password:. 

10.  Make sure Manually configure server settings for e-mail account. is 
checked. 

11.  Tab to next and press the spacebar or click on this choice.

12. Make sure IMAP is selected under My incoming mail server is a ___ server. 

13.  Enter "imap.gmail.com" under Incoming server:. 

14.  Make sure This server requires a secure connection (SSL) is checked under 
Incoming Server Information. 

15.  Type "smtp.gmail.com" under Outgoing server:. 

16.  Make sure This server requires a secure connection (SSL) is also checked 
under Outgoing Server Information. 

17.  Also check My outgoing server requires authentication. 

18.  Type "465" for Port: under Outgoing Server Information. 

19.  Click Next.  Or tab to it and press the spacebar.

20.  Now click Finish. 

21.  Click OK. 

22.  Select Tools

23.  Select Accounts... from the menu. 

24.  Highlight the Gmail account in the list. 

25.  Click Properties. 

26.  Go to the IMAP tab. 

27.  Enter "[Gmail]#Sent Mail" (not including the quotation marks) under Sent 
Items path:. 

28.  Type "[Gmail]#Drafts" under Drafts path:. 

29.  Type "[Gmail]#Trash" under Deleted Items path:. 

30.  Enter "[Gmail]#Spam" under Junk path:. 

31.  Click OK. 

32.  Click Close. 

34.  Shut down Windows Live Mail. 

35. Open Gmail in your browser. 

36.  Select Settings in the top right navigation bar. 

37.  Go to Labels.

·         38.   Tab to "remove" and press the spacebar or click on this choice. 
 Then tab to "okay" and press the spacebaror click this choice for the 
"[Imap]/Deleted Items", "[Imap]/Drafts", "Junk E-mail" and "Sent Items" labels.

39.  Open your Windows Live Mail folder in Windows. 

40.  Go to the Gmail (user name) sub-folder. 

41.  Open Notepad. 

Drag and drop the account{***}.oeaccount (where "***" represents a long random 
string) file from the imap.gmail.com onto Notepad to open it. 

You could locate this file and press enter on it from within notpad and it will 
open in notepad.

 

 

42.  Look for the '#' in "[Gmail]#Sent Items", "[Gmail]#Drafts", 
"[Gmail]#Trash" and "[Gmail]#Spam" and replace it with '/' (always excluding 
the quotation marks). 

43.  After editing, "[Gmail]#Sent Items" should read "[Gmail]/Sent Items", for 
example. 

Close Notepad saving the file. 

44.  Start Windows Live Mail. 

45.  Select Tools | IMAP Folders... from the menu. 

46.  Choose the Gmail account under Account(s):. 

47.  Click or  tab to and press the spacebar on "Reset List." 

48.  Now click OK. 

49.  Choose the desired synchronization settings for your folders: 

50.  Click on each folder in succession with the right mouse button or by 
pressing the application key or shift plus f10 in the folder list and choose 
the desired setting under Synchronization settings in the menu that pops up. 

51.  Do not enable synchronization for [Gmail]/All Mail unless you want Windows 
Live Mail to download all messages in your Gmail account. 

52.  You can safely turn off synchronization for the Spam and Trash folders. 

53.  Select Tools 

54.  Select Options... from the menu. 

55.  Go to the Advanced tab. 

56.  Make sure you Use the 'Deleted Items' folder with IMAP accounts is checked 
under IMAP. 

57.  Click OK. 

58.  Now that you've set up Gmail in Windows Live Mail, it's time to start 
using it. You can also import existing emails into Gmail. 

 

 

*II.  Access a Gmail Account in Windows Live Mail Using POP

To set up access to a Gmail account in Windows Live Mail: 

1.  Make sure POP access is turned on for your Gmail account.  Under settings 
on the Gmail  page.

2.  Go to Mail under Shortcuts in Windows Live Mail. 

3.  Click Add an e-mail account at the bottom of the list. 

4.  Type your Gmail address under E-mail address:. 

5.  Type your Gmail password under Password:. 

6.  Enter your name under Display Name:. 

7.  Make sure Manually configure server settings for e-mail account. is not 
checked. 

8. Tab to and press the spacebar on next or click this coice.

9.   Click Finish. 

10.  Click Send/receive in the Windows Live Mail toolbar. 

That's it. By now, a Gmail account should have appeared in the folder pane, and 
if you had any mail waiting in Gmail, it is now in its Inbox.
