this works fine in an organisation when you receive an out-of-office reply to an email so you know not to ring or email someone when they are away on business from the office or on holiday. However, I have to say that when I worked for Cheshire County Council, they had a very strict policy about emails, they strongly discourage staff from sending email to anyone outside the County Council. I don't know what it's like now as I haven't worked there for three years, but your email activity and internet site visits are monitored, belonging to an email list like this one would be absolutely forbidden. However, other orgs might be more tolerant of contacting people via email. Other than as has bene said, the out-of-office generated emails are just a nuisance, but I can put up with them.
