A Netbook will do fine with many tasks as long as you don't expect too much of
it. A netbook is essentially a series of engineering compromises to bring a
portable machine to market that is really light and has plenty of battery life.

Relatively speaking they have less resources so you may have to be more careful
than with a full on laptop. It is best to think of them as an email and web
browsing tool primarily. One of the things I would do is check what is running
on them and try and reduce the running count if possible. Invest or choose an
efficient anti-virus as AVG which is a common choice may be unhelpful. If it
comes with Norton or McAfee have that off straight away to see a real
improvement in speed. Despite the fact Windows 7 is newer and therefore has a
lot more going on with it you will find its power management better than XP so
worth considering if your screen reading software is up to it.

A friend I know who is travelling around the world with a netbook uses Skype
isn't an issue regarding performance.

Netbooks are small, they boot up ridiculously quickly compared to
laptops, they don't have CD drives.

I tried to do a Skype call with my Samsung NC10 netbook recently, a
video call, and somehow it couldn't deal with the amount of processing.

Hope useful

Subject: [access-uk] netbooks verses laptops

Hi, I'm in the market for a new laptop/netbook. I need something to take
with me to libraries/archives/university that will be used for taking
notes and word processing and might be used for scanning with K1000. It
will need to be capable of supporting WE in addition to all the usual of
being able to email and do web access.

I've heard lots of good things about netbooks. Will one of these be able
to do what I need? As its DSA paying for it I want something that will
last a reasonable amount of time. My current laptop has lasted 5 years.

Any help much appreciated
Yusuf
