Two tools I always start with:

http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/download/standard
and
https://www.malwarebytes.org/mwb-download/

Don't forget http://support.microsoft.com/fixit/ specifically
http://support.microsoft.com/mats/Malware_Prevention/en-us which will
"Diagnose and fix Windows security settings for IE, Windows firewall,
group policy, Registry, UAC; check Windows Update and antivirus
software status.

Then run windows update and you're done :)

(usually, that is!)
