just say "alexa ask radioplayer bbc radio 4"
or whatever station you want to listen to.
you can change it's recognised location for you by saying:
"ask radioplayer change location"
and it will ask you what is your nearest large town or city.

play radio has over 400 national and local UK radio stations many of
which you can't get with tune-in radio.
when i first setup the echo and asked it to play stations prior to
installing play radio it often said the station i wanted wasn't
available with tune-in and that was what made me install play radio and
now i can listen to local radio stations from all over the place.

no i've had no problem streaming to the Dot.
i've just said to it "alexa play radio bbc radio 4" and it started
playing straight away.
i followed this with "alexa play the carpenters" and she replied
shuffling the carpenters from your amazon music library and started
playing them.
and as steve said about the echo it is deffinately a bluetooth
speaker as i just paired my iphone to the echo fine.
as paul and carol said the app is very slugish especially when
setting the speakers up and when setting up skills but hopefully this
will improve with updates.
i found the best way of going down the lists of skills was to go to
the bottom of the list and work my way back up this way i could
access every skill consecutively until i reached the top, but if i
tried to go down the lists it kept jumping back to the topp periodically.

hi alistair,
the dot is available from amazon in the UK.
i have both the echo and the dot and apart from their size and
speaker volume they are both capable of doing the same things as
to regard of how you control them and the skills you can install.
the main differences are that the echo is around 9 inches tall
while the dot is only 1.3 inches, the echo has 2 buttons on the
top the wake button and a microphone mute button but the dot has 2
more buttons on the top volume up and down.
the dot also has a 3.5 audio out jack on the back which the echo
does not.
they both have bluetooth, which i haven't used yet, but i think
the difference is that the echo's bluetooth is for connecting to
smart phones and such like so you can transmit the sound from the
phone via the echo's speaker while the blutooth in the dot is just
for transmitting from the dot to a bluetooth speaker.
i'm sure your grandson would enjoy either as there are hundreds
of skills that you can install allowing you to do varying
things just by speaking to them.
you can ask it anything you would normally look up in an
encyclopedia, ask it to solve a mathmatical problem, ask about the
weather or ask about places in the world and much much more.
i have been quite supprised by just how loud the speaker in the
little dot goes and i haven't bothered connecting any external
speaker to it either wired or by bluetooth.
obviously the speaker in the echo is much louder but unless you
want to use it as a replacement for a hi-fi the dot is more than
adequate for asking questions, using as a timer/alarm clock or
even as a bedside radio/music player.
