I have Real Alternative on my computer, so I'll have to investigate why it
isn't playing a .ram file.

Two options. The real player which tends to take over your computer and hog
resources too much.
Or the better choice is to download: Real Alternative from the following
website.
www.whitestick.co.uk
Just go to the downloads page and you'll be able to play your real audio
media.
