If you wish to prevent anyone from seeing the contents of your Word document
you can do the following.

1 open the document as normal. Then press Alt+F then letter A for
"Save as".

2 Press Alt+7 to get the "tools" menu open.

3 Down arrow to "security options" and press ENTER.

4 Specify a password for open and also modification if that is
desired.

5 Check through the other options and press "OK" button.

6 Then save the document as normal.

Please be aware that Word password protection is very weak and commercial tools
and services do exist that can break these relatively easy, fine for casual
stuff but if you are really serious there are better ways now of protecting the
information.
