Douglas, contact Google and see if they can help. Maybe this ability only
works for those who's signed up recently, but who knows.

Thanks for this, Christopher - you have really got me worried now!   I just 
went to my account, switched to Basic View and activated the Settings link.

I copied and paste below the message which appeared lower down the screen -
 
"Mail Settings             
Settings can only be changed from Google Mail's standard view.
Switch to standard view"                   
                 
I originally wondered whether it had something to do with using different
screen readers, but that hardly seems likely. 

What worried me is that earlier  this month I contributed an article on
Google mail to an on line magazine and in it I gave the inability to change
Settings from Basic View as a problem of which newcomers to Gmail 
needed to be aware.   My credibility destroyed with one sentence!
