You're absolutely right. As far as I am concerned, their site is not accessible. No user could be expected to know that the option form appears at the bottom of the screen unless a specific instruction is contained on the web page to advise the user. We shouldn't have to guess what happens or seek sighted assistance when the unexpected happens. If the menu section links achieve nothing for us, that needs to be sorted - they could be properly employed as same page links which take us to the desired section on the page.

Accordingly, I think we should still press the web site to make it easier to use.

I now know what confused me and to a degree it is my fault for perhaps not
exploring properly.

They have obviously changed the site recently. You say:

4. The next page which loaded up contained their whole menu, split into
sections, each section marked as a navigable heading - just what you would
expect. The contents of each item within a section are laid out in a table
which you can navigate in the usual way. Again, very accessible.

This was not how one used to navigate the menu sections. Before the heading of
the first menu item, there are links to different sections of the menu. Once
you would click on the link to a particular menu category only that category of
the menu E.G. starters would display, where as now all menu sections are
displaied as headdings and one does not have to click on the link even though
the links are there. So what happened to me was that even though I would click
on the link for whatever section I might want, I would see the first item of
their menu as a heading rather than the one that I wanted. Granted I should
have checked and have gone further down the page to and would have noticed that
other menu sections are already there without a need to click on them. Thanks
for pointing this out. Of course have I never used the site before I would have
probably explored it and realised what you found, but because I was used to the
prior layout I just thought that the menu selection w
  as not updating properly.

That, of course, doesn't mean that comments we made regarding their site
shouldn't be taken in to the account and most certainly a website shouldn't be
as complicated to use, but it is good to know that it is actually usible.

Subject: [access-uk] Re: Hungry House

Using NVDA with Firefox on a Win 7 64 bit laptop, I actually managed
(eventually) to compile an order from different sections of a menu. I think I
know what the problem is and believe there is an easy way to address this.
Here is what I found:

1. On the home page of HungryHouse.co.uk, the cursor immediately went into
focus mode in the box where you type your postcode. Once entered, all of the
results were completely accessible.

2. You can filter the results by selecting the link which corresponds to the
type of cuisine you are after. I chose the Chinese filter.

3. Pressing h to jump by headings, I quickly landed on the results which
showed that 8 Chinese restaurants deliver to my address. I pressed enter on
the link which was the name of the restaurant I usually order from. So far, so
accessible.

4. The next page which loaded up contained their whole menu, split into
sections, each section marked as a navigable heading - just what you would
expect. The contents of each item within a section are laid out in a table
which you can navigate in the usual way. Again, very accessible.

5. My first item to add to the basket was a combination starter from the
Starters section. The name of the dish was announced as clickable but the
second column had a link for its price. I pressed enter on the price link.

6. The basket is actually a section at the bottom (in screen reader
terms) entitled 'My Items'. I set a placemarker at this point since I would be
coming back to the order list a few times. I found the combination starter in
the list of ordered items along with a running total.

7. Back up to the omelettes section and pressed enter on the price for a
shrimp omelette. Back down at the order list, this showed that the second item
had been added and the total had updated. So far, no problems.

8. Back up to chicken dishes for a chicken with ginger and spring onions.
Clicked on the price. This item did not show up in the order list. This looks
like the problem which has been reported in this thread.

8. The solution. What is happening in relation to some, but not all, dishes
is that the selected item is not being added immediately to the order but a
separate form is displayed right at the bottom of the page.
You can jump straight to this form by going to the bottom of the web page or by
pressing the number 6 on the long number row since this new section is the only
one at heading level 6.

This new section is displayed to ask you if you want to add rice, chips etc.
and to specify the quantity. There is an Add button in this form and selecting
this clears the form and places the selected dish in your order list.

So, you might find that selecting some dishes will result in the item being
placed immediately in the My Items order list which you should check every time
you select a dish. If the selected dish is not displayed in the order list,
then go down to the new form at the bottom of the page, make any relevant
additional selections and then select the add button.

I did not go beyond the point of compiling what would be a normal order for me
but since I found everything accessible, at least after noticing the temporary
query form at the bottom of the page for some items, I have no reason to think
that accessibility would suddenly be broken at checkout (but you never know).

Now that you know that you should be looking for a form at the bottom of the
menu page if your selection does not appear in the order list, you should be
able to compile an order. Good luck!
Paul

Hi

If you have an iPhone, iPod or iPad you can use the app, it's much
easier and our use hungryhouse all the time when I want a takeaway so
I have no reason or cause to complain about the service.

Sounds like a good one for Web Pages That Suck.
     http://www.webpagesthatsuck.com/

As you indicate, even the HTML is way off. The W3C validator finds
125 HTML errors, plus many warnings. Term 1 fail!

Wow - where do I even begin to start with this mess. I'm a
sighted
user mainly using Chromevox for learning and testing, and it
         wasn't at
all accessible. I did eventually manage to get to the results,
         but it
required endless tabbing, and the results are not presented as a
         list.
Not only is there no use of even the most basic ARIA
accessibility
markup, there isn't even the most basic correct use of HTML
tags,
markup and landmarks. Literally everything is wrong with this
page,
not just from an accessibility viewpoint but also the
encoding is
wrong, the developers have no clue how to optimize, the
markup is
appalling - well, I'll leave you to draw your own conclusions
         from the
test report results below, but bearing in mind this won
Dragons Den
funding, I'll bet the site developers charged tens of thousands.

ALL pages fail on almost all basic accessibility checks at
http://try.powermapper.com/Reports/2c6d61ee-683d-47f1-b825-60dc8d6473eb/report/map.ACC.htm.

And according to accessibility guideline checker
http://achecker.ca,
that one menu page you mentioned has 499 definite problems
and 1032
         potential problems.

The offficial W3 validator shows 65 hard fail errors.

keaways%2Fsouthwark-waterloo-bermondsey-borough-se1&charset=%28detect

It also has a mobile version of the site, but again this fails
         and is
         a navigation nightmare.
Have a try if you have any more luck with this - I didn't get
         far on Chromevox.
