Thanks for your input.

When I was at school I did several Pitmans and RSA typing exams, thanks to the foresight of a deputy head teacher who realised my future prognosis was blindness. I learned a lot about the way to write letters but much of that has been forgotten. But I am still pretty determined to do it properly, and one of the things to be careful about is properly centring a short letter vertically.

I have now created several OpenOffice templates with line numbers which I can use to do this, and I have been investigating the potential for generating letters programmatically with OO's equivalent of VBA.

Good point David.  I created a document with nothing but line numbers
down the left side and with 12-point font and the default page template
in OpenOffice, there are 52 lines per page.

Hello lovely listers,

It's a long time since I have had to write any formal letters using a
computer.  Not since I lost my sight in fact.

Having the need to write one in the next twenty-four hours or so I went
searching online for tips.

As I remembered, one piece of advice is to centre the letter
vertically.  In other words not to print a very short letter which does
not fill a page of A4 with the text at the top and tons of open space
below.
Does anybody have any tips for getting this part right?  I am using
Apache OpenOffice and I am not yet very familiar with it's functions.
And I suspect the more advanced among you can probably tell me how many
lines of default font will fit vertically on one side of A4.
