Hi Carol,
Within the Nod 32 main window, press F5 to get to the settings. Arrow down to user interface and uncheck the box which says, use graphical interface. I think it's the first check box. As for whether Nod is active or not, there will be an icon in your system tray which gives you the version of the virus signature database. So long as that icon is there, Nod is active. To turn it off, you have to temporarily disable it which is in the context menu when you click on the system tray icon.
