Hi Yusuf

It is a shame because the product concept is good, the Braille keyboard for
writing is fab, and I do put mine to a number of uses. But from what I have
seen and heard, I think the Braille cells are weaker than they should be
which is a quality issue with the manufacturers. These note-takers are such
an investment that you really want to know the device you buy is going to
stand the test of time. I had a BrailleNote years ago and it really was a
great note-taker in terms of the Braille display and reliable for not losing
my work. I have never lost anything on my Hims machine either, (touch
wood), but the recent replacement of its Braille display makes me wonder
now.

Good luck with whatever you choose. Hope to see you again in these parts in
the not too distant future, it was a great day!

Kind Regards,

Jackie Brown

I'm afraid to say I noticed a problem with the Braille display on the
demonstration model of the U2 when I was shown it last week. When I said I
thought there was a problem the person doing the demonstration said that it
probably needed cleaning. That's possibly true given the number of people
who have handled that particular model, however given what others have said,
it is making me think very seriously about this particular product. To be
clear the problem was that some of the dots in a particular cell were not
always rising correctly.

In almost every way I liked the U2, but this does leave me thinking.

Hello Rajmund

When you pay four figures for an item with Braille, you really do want to
look after it. I never ever put food or drink near my equipment. I still
feel bad that I dropped my iPhone down the toilet a couple of months ago and
had to replace it, it was a freak accident.

I love the Hims note-takers, but for ordinary use, nine months is a bit hard
to swallow. Anyway, fingers crossed this display will be a better servant.

Kind Regards,

Jackie Brown

Hello,
You can keep things next to your unit, as long as you look out.
The worse place you can take them is school. My u2 really didn't like that
one.

Hi Steve

Oh come on, my machine has been looked after like a baby, I won't have
drinks or food anywhere near my stuff. I take your point and agree, but for
ordinary wear, which is what I am talking about here, it should be covered.
Anyway it is sorted, but I do think people need to bear it in mind.

Hi,

It depends on what you mean. I have seen people who decide to spill coke
into their Braille cells. Should this be covered by warranty? I personally
don't think so.

All the best

Steve

In my view, there should be no question, a 12 month guarantee is a 12 month
guarantee, no quibbles at all!

There definitely is a concern if they are going to query replacing any cells
when a product is still under warranty. What is a guarantee for if it
doesn't cover one of the most fundamental components? I am happy with the
outcome, but it is something to bear in mind quite clearly.

It sounds like there's a quality issue that Hims need to address as a matter
of urgency. Certainly this would put me off buying their braille displays
etc., Pity because in other most respects they far outshine the competition
for variability of choice within their note-takers.

Paul

Subject: [access-uk] Braille display query on Hims products

I would like to take the opportunity to thank all those who contacted me off
list recently regarding the quality of Braille cells on their Hims products.
I had become aware that several dots on my U2 Mini, which is approximately
nine months old, were beginning to fade. It seemed random because they were
better on some occasions and less so on others. I wanted to know if others
were having an issue with their units, and I found comments very helpful.

I am happy to report that my machine is now back with me, having been away
for a month. The Braille display has been replaced on my U2 Mini, and is
now functioning perfectly again.

I do have concerns about the quality of Braille Cells Hims appear to be
using, and the stance they seem to adopt regarding any replacement under
warranty. Nevertheless, everything has been resolved to my satisfaction, so
thanks indeed to everyone who contacted me with their views and kind words
of support.

Kind Regards,

Jackie Brown
