[access-uk] Re: Becrypt Encryption Software

In case you're interested, I have now got my laptop set up with Becrypt.
Becrypt loads about five seconds after I switch on the laptop. There is no
audible feedback, but all I need to do is to type in my user name, press
Enter, type in my Windows password and press Enter. If I've been
successful, the operating system starts to load, and if I haven't, I can
tell because there's no hard disk activity. I just need to press any key
and try again.

We have two levels of authentication in place, so when Windows has loaded, I
connect through VPN by entering my user name, a six-digit code which I have
chosen and a six-digit RSA token which is displayed in a piece of software
which is totally accessible. This code is generated every 30 seconds or so,
so it gives you plenty of time to find it, switch to the VPN window and
enter it.

The fact that the hard drive is now encrypted does seem to slow down the
loading of Windows to some extent, but at least all is working well and I
can log on securely without any problems.

Caroline.

Hi Caroline,

When I got to work this morning I checked the application we use.

I got it wrong.

It is Encryption Plus Hard Disk.

Hello John,

Thank you for your reply.

Please could you tell me the name of the software you use? I'm not sure
where Becrypt originates from or if we may be able to use a different
product if we have to, but it certainly sounds as if your package is usable,
so might be worth bearing in mind if everything else fails.

Hello,

We do not use that system at work, but a similar package which achieves the
same end.

I can use it with Window-Eyes.

With our system, at any time that the initial sign-on is being requested, F5
can be pressed to initiate audible feedback. In this way, I get 2 beeps to
enter my user-id,<tab> and 3 beeps to enter my password. If I then get a
single beep, all is successful. If 4 beeps, followed by 2 beeps, something
was wrong and it has gone back to the initial screen again. When I get it
wrong, I usually get it right the second time.
The audible feedback can be switched of again with another F5.

I get e-mail warnings to change my password every 90 days and do this within
a screen reader run, so no problems with that.

Now, I am not saying that your system will work the same way, but you should
get your system installer to go back to the manufacturers and ask them how
they deal with the position you are in. If it is a US product then they will
certainly have a way round it.

Subject: [access-uk] Becrypt Encryption Software

Hello,

Has any Jaws user had experience of the Becrypt encryption software? The
software encrypts the hard drive of a laptop so it cannot be retrieved if
the laptop is stolen. This software is going to be installed on my work
laptop. My concern is that I may be asked to enter my user name and
password by Becrypt before Windows actually loads, in which case Jaws will
of course not yet be available.

Is my understanding correct, and if so, is there a way around this problem
for a screen reader user? Most of the time it should not be an issue as my
password will only change every 90 days, but if there is an error, Jaws will
be unable to read it for me.

I wonder whether all encryption software works in the same way, but Becrypt
is the favoured product at work so I would be interested in finding a
workaround for it if one exists.

Thanks,

Caroline.
