Is there a way to read such sorties without flash?

Could you link to an example of such a story?

And if I must use flash, does it work ok with jaws.

It can be. Depends on what version of JAWS you're using, what browser and browser version you're using, what version of the Flash Player Plugin you're using, what the Flash content does, how it is authored, and how it is embedded in the webpage. See also:

The major update since that blog post is that the Flash plugin with accessibility support for browsers other than Internet Explorer has now been released.
