[access-uk] Adobe reader

Hi,
I am having continual problems with Adobe Reader. I currently have 8.1 and
every time I try to use it to read a PDF file, or when it opens when
downloading a PDF file, it freezes and announces there is an error. I have
repaired the programme, but, the same happens!
Once I have the file, there is no problem as I convert it to text with
Accessible PDF.
Is there any other programme apart from Adobe Reader which is more stable
and easy to use?
Any help or advice would be welcome.
