The Draytek are repotred to be very good, but if price is a consideration
and you don't need exotic features like VOIP on the router then a cheaper
alternative would be the Netgear DG-834g or DG-834gt which at around £50
cheaper and very commonly available. They are eminently compatible with
with PC and Macintosh systems. Try and make sure wireless cards and router
come from the same company as this is belt and braces way of being sure
they'll work together and if they don't tech support can be asked why not.

Hi Marie,

(I'd almost finished this, but see Andrew has beaten me to
it. Still, here goes anyway)

A wireless network is entirely possible.

The components you need are as follows.

1) A Wireless ADSL Modem/Router which of course connects to
the outside world.

2) Wireless network cards in the PCs as required. If you
have desktops, these will usually be PCI cards. If you have
laptops, they will usually be PCMCIA cards.

The ADSL Modem/Router is usually the most important
component, and here you may have to make some decisions.

Personally, I go for one of the Draytek Vigor range.
http://www.draytek.co.uk I currently have one which in
addition to wireless, has 4 RJ45 ports, plus a USB Printer
Port. The latter is very useful since the printer is not
then tied to one PC.

Bear in mind also that as ADSL speeds are increasing, you
may want to make sure that the router you select is capable
of the higher speeds. Some will only handle 512k, where now
one can get speeds of 2MB or higher.

The only additional advice I can offer is to seriously RTFM
- Read The !! Manual. Well actually, read the installation
instructions very carefully. Very often you will find that
they tell you to install software and hardware in a specific
sequence. Get that sequence wrong, and you could be in
serious soapy bubble. (Trouble)

George.

At last ADSL is available round here.
At present our 2 pcs are networked via an RJ45 cable
connected to the 2 identical motherboard integrated
network
facility, we have an external modem. My pc operates on win
XP
SP2 and Dave's on Win ME.
Is a wireless network including shared ADSL MODEM with the
2
pcs possible with this set up? If so, what do we need to
buy?
I've looked at the sites of the most popular service
providers but they don't talk a lot about networked
systems
and when they do, they give everything fancy names without

giving any definition.

Thanks in advance to those who will make the time to help.

Cheers now,

Marie

p.s. If other options are available allowing the 2 pcs to
use
the modem independently, would like to know of those as
well
in case we can't go wireless or the hardware is not
available to buy in these backwaters.
