In OE, one way that you can keep from opening mail, and pick and choose
which ones to open is by changing a setting.. Kind of awkward at 1st, But I
have been doing it now for a week, and I cruise through the e-mail a lot
faster.. In the upper left corner, select 'View', then 'Lay-out', remove
the check-mark from 'Show Pre-view Pane'. This way you can delete the ones
you don't want to open.
If you don't want to receive messages from a few people, you can block their
messages by selecting a message from that person, select 'Message', then
scroll down to 'Block Sender'. Or you can 'Create rules for message' right
above, and be more specific as to moving messages to certain folders that
contain certain words.
  Hope this helps! Tina
