Passport to the Pub: A guide to British pub etiquette

http://www.sirc.org/publik/pub.html

Today's site, from those indefatigable researchers at the Social
Issues Research Centre, Oxford, England, offers an engaging and
informative handbook for confidently navigating English pub
culture. Readers will find this a helpful guide, if only for
decoding pub scenes in British television.

"By all means visit Stonehenge and Buckingham Palace, but if you
want to see what real life in Britain is all about, you have to
go to the pub. Pub-going is by far the most popular native
pastime. The 61,000 pubs in Britain have over 25 million loyal
customers. Over three-quarters of the adult population go to
pubs, and over a third are 'regulars', visiting the pub at least
once a week. The pub is a central part of British life and
culture. If you haven't been to a pub, you haven't seen Britain.
... Not surprisingly, given the lack of information available,
we found that what tourists didn't know about pub etiquette would
fill a book. This is the book." - from the website

The site provides a book format with the chapter headings on the
right sidebar. Beginning with the essential information on how to
locate and recognize different types of public houses,
indispensable tips on how to get served and what to order, the
guide offers the two most crucial phrases for greasing the social
wheels in a pub without looking "naff".

"The bar counter in a pub is possibly the only site in the
British Isles in which friendly conversation with strangers is
considered entirely appropriate and normal behaviour." - from the
website

Additional topics delve into pub games, the rituals observed in
pub talk for men and the distinct differences for women, along
with techniques for spotting the regulars and appropriate
behavior to the publican and staff.

Crawl over to the site for a guide to the mysterious unwritten
rules of British pub etiquette.
