Fellow EDI581's,
I have never used Powerpoint in a presentation primarily because I haven't
had the opportunity to learn to use it. My experiences seeing it used in a
presentation have left me with the thought that the presentation was neat,
well-organized, and gave the pertinent information that the presenter wanted
to share. Powerpoint used in a classroom could be an effective tool for some
things. I think that it would be beneficial for organizational purposes and
to highlight important information to cover. I think that it would be useful
for outlines, summaries, and also for keeping students and teachers on
schedule. It would be useful for teachers who can't draw well and would also
be valuable in highlighting important material by the use of contrasting
colors and labels to express information adequately. It could be utilized
effectively for time management purposes and to streamline lectures because
of its flexibility and legibility. Teachers also would not have to make
special efforts for student notes. A copy of the presentation could be given
to students and then students would be able to add their own notes to this.
This would be a more efficient method of lecture and notetaking. A student I
spoke with gave this perspective- "Powerpoint, in addition to study sheets
handed out, is the best system because you can refer to it later."
I also believe that Powerpoint serves the slower, visual learner more
adequately. The introvert or student who needs more time to reflect and
think would have a better opportunity to retain material through Powerpoint
because of the auditory and visual presentation. The only potential flaw of
Powerpoint would be if the teacher became too dependent on it and did not use
hands-on approaches.
